Exemption to University Policy - Past Term

Retroactive Withdrawal (Past Term)

Retroactive withdrawals will only be considered when students provide verification of unusual or extenuating circumstances which prevented them from withdrawing by the deadline. Supporting documentation on official letterhead including letters from physicians, instructors etc. must be attached to the petition as well as a letter of support from the dean of the student's college on official letterhead.

International students on an F1 or J1 visa who are requesting a total withdrawal must include a letter of support from International Student & Scholar Services.

Notice: Approval of a retroactive withdrawal does not waive tuition. Inquiries regarding tuition should be directed to the Income Accounting/Student Loan Services Office, 175 Student Services Building, 801.581.7344.

W Delete Past Term

The Academic Senate established the "W" grade to allow students to withdraw from classes for circumstances beyond their control without affecting their grade point average. Requests to delete a "W" are not approved unless documentation is provided that demonstrates University administrative actions are the cause for the withdrawal. Supporting documentation on official letterhead must be attached to the petition as well as a letter of support from the dean of the student's college on official letterhead. Requests to delete a “W” are only accepted from the dean or dean’s office designee of the college associated with the student's major. Students must initiate requests to delete a “W” with their college dean or dean’s office designee. As such, a student may need to schedule an appointment and meet with the dean (or designee) before a petition to delete a “W” may be initiated.

Section Change/Cross Referenced Course

Retroactive petitions for adding/dropping classes are approved without committee action if a student has been enrolled in a different section of the class or in a course that meets with another class. For example:

  • A student is registered for the wrong section and received an "EU" grade in that section.
  • ENGL 2200 meets with FILM 2200.

Please complete steps 1 and 4 under Procedures for Filing Petitions. All other retroactive drop and add requests require completion of each step listed under the heading.

Please note:A $50 late add fee is charged per class for all retroactive add requests that are approved.
